Beta-Carotene: for gorgeous skin and healthy eyes
Beta-carotene is one of the group of carotenoids, of which there are over 400 in nature. Carotenoids are phytochemicals that are responsible for the yellow or red colours in fruit and vegetables. Beta-carotene is the most-common and best-known carotenoid.
It is the precursor of vitamin A (hence it is also known as provitamin A). The body is able to produce vitamin A from beta-carotene as necessary. For demographic groups that have a very low intake of vitamin A, eating fruit and vegetables that are rich in beta-carotene goes a long way toward covering their daily vitamin A requirements. The body needs 6-12 micrograms of beta-carotene to convert into one microgram of vitamin A. However, only part of the beta-carotene in the human body is converted to vitamin A. The rest is stored. The amount of beta-carotene converted to vitamin A is regulated on the basis of amount of vitamin A already present in the body, which prevents its excessive accumulation in the body.
Only around 50 carotenoids have a provitamin A effect and beta-carotene is the most active of them.
